Can a normal electrician install an EV charger?
A normal licensed electrician can install an EV charger. It is a 240V branch circuit with a breaker, wire, and either a receptacle or a hardwired unit; no EV-specific license exists or is needed.
Manufacturer-certified installers matter only for some warranty programs and rebates, so check the paperwork on your unit before booking.
The parts that need care are the ones any good electrician already does: a load calculation to confirm panel capacity, correct GFCI protection for the receptacle type, a permit, and inspection.
Installing it yourself is legal in some jurisdictions for homeowners, but a 50 amp continuous load is an unforgiving first project. Errors here run hot for hours at a time.
