How many amps is a 30 hp motor full load?

A 30 horsepower three-phase motor draws 80 amps at 230 volts and 40 amps at 460 volts, per NEC Table 430.250. Doubling voltage halves current, which is why big motors run at higher voltage.

At 200 volts the same motor pulls 92 amps. Single-phase 30 HP machines are rare, and their current is roughly double the three-phase figure at the same voltage.

Those table values, not the nameplate, size the conductors: multiply by 125 percent, so the 460V motor needs wire good for 50 amps.

Starting current is its own subject, typically six times FLA for a few seconds, which the breaker sizing rules in 430.52 already anticipate.
