How many breakers can go on a 200 amp panel?
A 200 amp panel accepts as many breakers as it has spaces, and residential panels commonly come with 40 to 60. The label inside the door states the maximum for that model.
Adding up breaker handles past 200 amps is normal and legal. Loads are diverse; nothing runs at once. The NEC limits the calculated load, not the sum of the breakers.
The 2008 NEC removed the old 42-circuit cap, so modern panels are limited only by their listing.
The biggest single breaker you can install is whatever the busbar rating and panel listing allow, which on a 200 amp panel is typically a 200 amp main or back-fed breaker.
