Is a 10 gauge extension cord overkill?

A 10 gauge extension cord is overkill for most household jobs and exactly right for a specific few. Plugging in lamps and drills through 10 gauge wastes nothing but money and shoulder strength; the cord is heavy and stiff.

Where it earns its keep: space heaters, welders, RV hookups, air compressors, and any full 15 amp load at 100 feet or beyond. There, thinner cords lose real voltage and run hot.

Electrically there is no downside to oversizing; the tool draws what it draws and enjoys stiffer voltage.

One habit to avoid: a big cord can outlast the receptacle circuit behind it, so a 10 gauge cord on a tired 15 amp circuit fixes nothing.
